What should I do if I don't agree with the assessor's value of my property?
Since any increase or decrease in assessed value will impact the amount of taxes you pay, it is important to contact the county assessor's office if you feel that the assessed value exceeds the market value of your property. Assessor's representatives will review any information you may have relating to the value of your property. If you have any questions concerning the valuation, please call the county assessor's office.
If, after talking with the assessor's office,
a difference of opinion as to value still exists, you can appeal
the assessed value to the county board of equalization or county
assessment appeals board. If you are appealing a value that
is already on the assessment roll on the lien date, January
1, you must file your application to appeal during the "regular
assessment filing period." You may find the regular assessment
filing period for your county at www.boe.ca.gov/proptaxes/pdf/filingperiods.pdf.
If you are appealing a supplemental or escape assessment, you
must file your application to appeal within 60 days after the
date of the notice of the supplemental or escape assessment.
If you decide to appeal, you must file an Application for Changed Assessment form with your clerk of the board, and your application must be filed timely in order for the clerk to schedule an appeals hearing. Additional information is available in Publication 30, Residential Property Assessment Appeals.
